Technical SEO: What Canadian Businesses Should Check First

Published September 24, 2025 · Cory Highfield

A practical technical SEO checklist covering crawling, indexing, performance, mobile usability and site structure.

Can search engines crawl the site?

Check robots.txt, XML sitemaps, status codes, redirects and important pages. A beautiful page is not useful in search if crawlers cannot reliably reach it.

Are the right pages indexed?

Look for accidental noindex directives, duplicate URLs, thin utility pages and important pages that are missing from search.

Is the site structured logically?

URLs, headings, navigation and internal links should tell a consistent story. A service page should connect naturally to related information.

Does the site work well on mobile?

Check text size, tap targets, navigation, forms, images and performance on smaller screens.

Use Search Console as evidence

Google Search Console can reveal queries, indexing issues and page performance. Combine that information with analytics and a manual review.

The practical takeaway

Good digital work is rarely about finding one magic tactic. It is about making many small decisions consistently: clear content, sensible structure, reliable technology, useful measurement and an ongoing willingness to improve.

That is how I approach SEO and web development. The website should serve the organization and the people it is trying to reach first. Search visibility is one important result of doing that work well.
